The "Why"Students learn differently since you and I went to school. They are growng up in a digital society and have the world's wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. Knowing facts is no longer important since anyone can just ask "Siri". Now, students must be able to use digital devices to research, create, evaluate, and collaborate. To be College and Career Ready, our students need to be digital citizens who utilize 21st century skills.

I started piloting BYOD in April 2012. The picture shows students working collaboratively with their partner, using their mobile devices in my class last year. The clear plastic bins on each table are where the students put their devices when we were not using them. By taking the phones out of their pockets and putting them where I can see them helped to minimize misuse. Additionally, I could quickly and visually see who had devices and who did not and adjust accordingly.
The Benefits I Have Witnessed in my Classroom So Far
I have seen numerous benefits with BYOD including:
- Increase in student engagement- Kids were excited to learn!
- Student behavior improved- They didn't want to miss out!
- Instant feedback for students- Students knew instantly if they were right or wrong.
- Enabled differentiated instruction- I could make instruction more personalized
based on each child's needs!
- Learned to be digital citizens- Used technology appropriately and to enhance
student achievement while students learned "netiquette".

While this video is made for a different school district, the facts are nation-wide. Additionally, Colonial School District also strives to harness the immense opportunities mobile devices can provide in our classrooms. |

Did you know?Watch the video to the left to find out some eye-opening facts about the impact digital devices have on our world! What does it all mean? It means that our students need to be using technology in education. We can't ignore the demands of the "real world". We must prepare our kids by allowing opportunities to practice the skills they will need during class and let them use skills they already know for something educational. Let technology enhance instruction!
